What it costs

For eligible patients, standard carrier screening for cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy and fragile X syndrome can be covered by Medicare, with no out-of-pocket cost for the screening itself.*

Your eligibility is confirmed before testing goes ahead, so you know what you will pay upfront.

Expanded screens for 600+ conditions, on your own ($699) or as a couple ($1,350). Medicare doesn’t cover Expanded.

Screening as a couple

Carrier screening is most useful when you understand the results for both partners.

For many inherited conditions, a pregnancy is only at increased chance if both parents carry a variant in the same gene. If one partner is found to be a carrier, testing the other partner can help clarify what that means for a future pregnancy.

How long it takes

Your kit is usually sent within one business day after your consultation. Most people complete and return their swab the same week.

Once your sample reaches the laboratory, our Standard results usually take about 3 weeks, an industry-leading turnaround,† and Expanded results about 3 to 4 weeks. We’ll keep you updated along the way.

What your report includes

Your report shows your result for the genes included in your test and clearly explains what was screened.

It is written in plain language, so you can understand what your result means without having to interpret a clinical report yourself.

You can access it securely online whenever you need it.

If your result needs a closer look

Most couples won’t both carry a change in the same gene (Kirk et al., New England Journal of Medicine, 2024).

If a result does need further discussion, support is included. A genetic counsellor can explain what the result means and the chance for a pregnancy, and help you plan.

You will not be left to work it out on your own.
