Carrier screening and Medicare.
What Medicare covers, who can access it, and where expanded screening sits.

What Medicare funds
Medicare supports reproductive carrier screening for three conditions: cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy and fragile X syndrome. This is covered under MBS item 73451 for people who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. The item can generally only be claimed once in a lifetime.
Who is eligible
You need to be eligible for Medicare and either pregnant or planning a pregnancy. You do not need to have a family history of these conditions to access the screening.
How testing works for couples
The pregnant or pregnancy-planning partner is tested first. If they are found to carry cystic fibrosis or spinal muscular atrophy, their reproductive partner can then access Medicare-funded testing for that condition under MBS item 73452.
Fragile X works differently
Fragile X is inherited differently from cystic fibrosis and spinal muscular atrophy, so testing the second partner generally does not provide additional information about the pregnancy risk.
This is why Medicare’s partner-testing pathway applies to cystic fibrosis and spinal muscular atrophy, rather than Fragile X.
What Medicare does not cover
Medicare currently covers screening for these three conditions, but not broader expanded carrier screening panels.
If you choose expanded screening, the additional conditions are tested outside the Medicare rebate.
Without Medicare
If you are not eligible for Medicare, you can still access carrier screening privately. Any applicable testing and consultation costs may apply.
