Privacy Policy

How we collect, use and protect your personal information.

Elucia (“we”, “us”) handles personal information under the Privacy Act and the Australian Privacy Principles.

This policy covers our website, our carrier screening service, your samples and your results.

What we collect

About you: your name, date of birth, sex, contact details and delivery address.

For Medicare: your Medicare number, so we can check eligibility and bulk bill Standard screening.

About your health: whether you’re pregnant or planning a pregnancy, and anything you tell your telehealth GP, including family history.

Your sample and results: your cheek swab, the genetic results from it, and your report.

Your partner’s details: if you order a couple test, or your partner is tested after you, with their agreement.

Payments: handled by our payment provider. We don’t store your full card details.

When you use the site: your IP address and approximate location, device and browser, pages viewed, and cookie identifiers. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings.

Health and genetic information is sensitive information. We only collect it with your consent, which you give when you order.

How we use it

To check the test is right for you, arrange your telehealth consult, send your kit, test your sample, prepare and share your report, arrange genetic counselling, claim Medicare where you’re eligible, keep you updated by email, answer your questions, improve the site and our service, and meet our legal obligations. We don’t sell your personal information, and we don’t use your genetic information for marketing.

Who we share it with

We only share what each one needs: the telehealth GP service that reviews your order and talks your results through with you; our accredited pathology laboratories, which test your sample; genetic counsellors, if your results show an increased chance; Services Australia, to claim Medicare for Standard screening; your partner, for a couple test only, where you both agree to a combined report you’ll both see; service providers who run parts of the service for us, including our results portal, email and customer support, payments, couriers and analytics; and anyone else you ask us to, such as your own GP or specialist.

We never share your results with insurers or employers. We may also disclose information where the law requires or allows it.

How your sample is tested

Your sample is tested by an accredited pathology laboratory. We send it, with only the details the lab needs (name, date of birth, sex and, for couples, your partner’s details), for that purpose only. We take reasonable steps to make sure the lab handles your information consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.

Your sample

Your sample is used only for the test you ordered. It isn’t used for research unless you separately agree. You can ask us to have it destroyed once testing is complete, where the law allows.

Your results and your relatives

Genetic results can be relevant to your blood relatives. We won’t tell them about your results without your consent, except in the narrow cases the Privacy Act allows to lessen or prevent a serious threat to their life, health or safety. Your telehealth GP or genetic counsellor can help you think about sharing your result with family.

Insurance

Private health insurers in Australia can’t use genetic results to set your premium or refuse cover. Life insurance rules are different and have been changing, so check where things stand before you apply for cover.

Security and how long we keep it

Your results and health information are stored securely, with access limited to the people who need it. We keep health records for as long as the law requires. No method of storage is completely secure. If a data breach is likely to cause serious harm, we’ll notify you and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, as the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme requires.

Access, correction and complaints

You can ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, including your report, and ask us to correct it if it’s wrong. There’s no charge. If you think we’ve mishandled your information, contact us first. If you’re not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.

Changes

We may update this policy. The current version is always on this page.

1. Total Medicare-funded standard carrier screening tests in Australia (items 73451 and 73452), Nov 2023 to Aug 2026. Excludes privately paid screening. Sources: Services Australia MBS item data (data.gov.au); Research Square preprint, 2025.

2. Centre for Genetics Education, NSW Health. Reproductive carrier screening. 2024.

3. Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG). Genetic Carrier Screening (C-Obs 63). Interim update July 2024.

* May be $0, bulk billed for eligible patients under Medicare item 73451. Medicare covers Standard carrier screening once per lifetime, and eligibility is confirmed before testing proceeds. Without Medicare, a fee applies to the screening and the consultation. Medicare doesn’t cover Expanded screening.

† Our Standard carrier screening results usually take about 3 weeks from when the lab receives your swab. Industry-leading based on our laboratory partner’s turnaround data, October 2026.

‡ Every test includes a telehealth GP consult. A genetic counsellor consult is also included if your results show an increased chance (a higher-risk result).

Elucia screening identifies carrier status. Talk to your healthcare provider about clinical decisions.
